TESTIMONIAL

"Texas SEO was very professional and knowledgable in designing my site. I wanted a blog, newsletter, and search engine optimization included. Texas SEO set me up with all of the above with simple interfaces to operate on my own. I'd recommend them to anyone who wants a site done right at a fair price."

US Navy PRT

Every 6 months each command is required to conduct a PRT (Physical Readiness Test) a.k.a PFA (Physical Fitness Assessment). This is required to show data of the readiness of each command and is reported to the fleet commander. Needless to say, I just got back from my PRT.

The Navy’s PRT is quite simple really. You just have to do 4 things. 1) Sit down and touch your toes, 2) 50-100 sit-ups in 2 minutes, 3) 40-100 push-ups in 2 minutes, and 4) 1.5-mile run in a time based on your age. All of it is based on age and gender so the older you are the less you have to do.

I had actually stopped working out completely for 6 days after my 5k and 10k run. Mainly because I had already tracked 70 miles that week. I know, that’s too long of a resting period and I admit I was feeling a little lazy and bummed out about my performance for those 2 events. Well, after 6 days I decided to do a 10-mile run and then time my 1.5 mile run. I ended up hurting my left calf and had a hard time finishing my 1.5-mile run but managed to finish it just at 8:42.

Here’s the kicker… I find out that I have the PRT the next day! Yes, that’s today. It’s alright, I stretched and massaged it and even put icy-hot on it overnight. It was still hurting when I showed up at the gym after work to muster (roll call) but I didn’t want it to be a reason for me not to do my PRT. Even though it would be a valid reason I did just fine. I was able to touch my toes, do 100 sit-ups, 100 push-ups and ran the 1.5-mile in good time.

It’s funny how it starts out though. There were 4 of us who stood in the back and gave everyone a 4-second grace period. Among us were AN Leon, AMAN Sancheztelez, the commanding officer (skipper), and myself. We took off like a bat out of hell and ran around the croud. Throughout the first half Sanchez was right on my heel. I heard the clinking of his chain, the footsteps, the breathing. At half-way a senior chief yelled out “slow down, you’re flying!”

After half-way he was right beside me. He seemed to be losing it though because he was looking down at the ground mainly and was moving towards the center of the street. I had to tell him to “move over” so he doesn’t get hit by the oncoming cars. There were constructions ahead and cars coming our way. The only alternative was to run DIRECTLY in the middle of the street.

At 3/4 of the way we were neck and neck… on the last stretch now, he picks up and starts going past me. In my mind I’m thinking “oh no you don’t! Not this time!” So I started picking up the pace and started sprinting until I couldn’t hear his steps and only the cheering in front of me. I was disoriented because I thought I was done… I passed the mark that we started from but to my realization it was another 50 feet from that line. I had slowed down and lost a few seconds.

It was one hell of a run. What’s suprising is, even though we were the last 4 to run we were the first 4 to finish. I came in first, then Sanchez, CO and Leon. My goal for next time is to get into the low 8′s. I don’t want to shoot for 7 just yet. Not until I’m properly prepared. Hey, 6 months is a long time but it’s hard staying focused and on a regular workout schedule when you’re on a carrier working 82+ hours a week for months at a time. More on that another day. Take care.
